On September 29, 2017, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) will organize a forum to discuss capacity development and enhancement of service delivery for local government bodies in the Kyrgyz Republic. Over 120 representatives of municipalities, local councils and civil society organizations from Jalal-Abad, Issyk-Kul, Osh, and Naryn provinces, national government, and international organizations will come together to share best practices and lessons learned.

The event will include presentations on innovative tools and strategies to improve local service delivery and ensure sustainability. Municipalities from Jalal-Abad and Issyk-Kul provinces will share their experiences and best practices in improving garbage collection services, establishing public-private partnerships to provide State subsidized arts and culture programming, and privatizing agricultural services.

The American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) released its 2014 Legal Profession Reform Index (LPRI) for the Kyrgyz Republic Volume II during an event today at the Ak-Keme Hotel in Bishkek. The Kyrgyzstan LPRI, based on an innovative tool created by ABA ROLI, assesses the development of the legal profession in emerging democratic and transitioning states, based on international standards for an independent, ethical, and effective legal profession. The LPRI is published by ABA ROLI, with funding from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), and is distributed free of charge.

Six teams of young people from Kyrgyz orphanages and boarding schools will dance in a flash mob, titled “Gift,” in Bishkek on December 19 to draw attention to the concerns of youth living in residential facilities, and as a means of social expression and development.  The flash mob will take place at the Bishkek Park Trade Center, 148, Kievskaya St., from 13:00 to 14:00. The Jasa.kg program of the International Youth Foundation catalyzes a generation of young people to actively engage in building a stable, prosperous and democratic Kyrgyzstan through a package of services designed to support young people. The program has three primary objectives: inspiring active citizenship among Kyrgyzstan’s youth, preparing youth for the job market, and creating a culture of positive youth development.

A Modern Transport and Logistics Workshop will take place in Bishkek on December 18-20. The workshop, to be held at the Ak – Keme Hotel, will be attended by carriers, truck operators, freight forwarders, logistics service providers, warehouse and storage operators from Afghanistan, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. Workshop participants will discuss modern challenges and opportunities to the South and Central Asia regional system for movement and storage of goods.

USAID Reading Together Project will celebrate National Literature Day in the Kyrgyz Republic. The purpose of the holiday is to celebrate Chingiz Aitmatov’s achievements, familiarize students with his work and increase public interest in reading books. National Literature Day will be celebrated in Bishkek and Chui, Talas, Jalal-Abad, Batken and Osh oblasts via a series of fun events in primary schools including open classes, reading competitions, book fairs, drawing contests, and literary quizzes.

On December 10th at 9 a.m., representatives from the Ministry of Health of the Kyrgyz Republic will discuss the results of an initiative to promote rational use of antibiotics coordinated by the USAID-funded Quality Health Care Project (QHCP). The discussion will highlight significant improvements in physicians’ prescription of antibiotics for common illnesses.  The event will take place at the Park Hotel in Bishkek.

A national conference on “The role of local communities in state and municipal service improvement: Achievements and Challenges” will be conducted in Bishkek on 04 December 2014 at “Jannat Regency” Bishkek from 9.00am till 04:00pm. The major outcome of this conference is to make recommendations on increasing state and municipal service quality provisions. Additionally results of a three year “Local Transparency and Cooperation Initiative” program will be presented as well as the methodology on the scale of citizen satisfaction with services and ways forward will be outlined.

USAID's Reading Together Project in  partnership with the National Testing Center of  Ministry of Education and Science of the Kyrgyz Republic is holding a round table on the 4th of December 2014 in Bishkek at the Park Hotel, 87, Orozbekov st..,for government and regional educational institutions and international organizations working in this field to discuss the results of the early grade reading assessment in primary school (EGRA), conducted in 130 schools of Kyrgyzstan and to develop the recommendations for the use of the data received to improve the reading skills and comprehension of the  primary grade students.

On World AIDS Day 2014, nearly 35 years into the global HIV/AIDS epidemic, it is important to reflect on how far we have come together.  Not so long ago, hospital beds were filled with dying patients.  Thankfully, due to our strong partnerships and collective efforts globally, new HIV infections have dropped by half since the peak of the epidemic and life expectancy has rebounded dramatically.
