The U.S. Embassy and the Ministry of Education announced yesterday the launch of three new Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) secondary schools in Alexandria, Dakahleya, and Assiut. The American people, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), partnered with the Government of Egypt to build and develop the country’s first two STEM high schools in 2011.
“The remarkable thing about STEM education is students learn how to think outside the box, conduct experiments, and work in teams,” said USAID/Egypt Mission Director Sherry F. Carlin. “These are all important skills that will help Egypt’s youth grow into future leaders and design solutions to the country’s greatest development challenges.”
Cairo – Today the Egyptian Ministry of Health released the results of the 2014 Demographic and Health Survey (DHS). The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), in partnership with the Ministry of Health, UNICEF, and the United Nations Population Fund, completed this survey to help improve the health and nutritional status of the Egyptian people.
“This survey provides critical data to detect health trends and identify issues to address,” said Sherry F. Carlin, USAID/Egypt Mission Director. “Through support from the American people, Egypt now has nearly thirty years of data documenting its progress in improving the health of women and children, including child mortality, vaccination coverage, nutritional status, and maternal health care.”
Cairo – In partnership with the Egyptian Ministries of International Cooperation and Higher Education, the U.S. Government launched the U.S.-Egypt Higher Education Initiative today to provide educational opportunities for high-achieving Egyptians to learn skills that will better meet the needs of the 21st century economy. Through this $250 million initiative, the U.S. Government will provide up to 1,900 university scholarships and exchanges to Egyptians to study in Egypt and the United States and will support up to 20 higher education partnerships to strengthen research and exchanges between Egyptian and U.S. universities.
“Today we celebrate a new and exciting chapter in the educational history of our two nations – the comprehensive three year panorama of scholarships and university partnerships that the American government and people will fund and support,” said U.S. Ambassador to Egypt Stephen Beecroft. “The U.S.-Egypt Higher Education Initiative is a sign of U.S. commitment to Egypt’s future.”
Today the Egyptian Ministry of Health launched the 2015 National Polio Immunization Campaign to provide the first of two phases of polio vaccinations to up to 14.8 million children under the age of five. The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) is supporting the logistics and operations of the campaign to help Egypt sustain its polio-free status. “The American people rejoiced with the Egyptian people in 2006 when Egypt was declared polio-free,” said Sherry F. Carlin, USAID/Egypt Mission Director. “USAID and the Ministry of Health are committed to keeping Egypt polio-free through this annual immunization campaign.”
Cairo– Students and professors from seven Egyptian University law faculties participated in a national “practice arbitration” competition that was conducted with the support of the American Bar Association (ABA) and the U.S. Embassy on April 3 and 4, 2015. Both the winning team and the runner-up team are from Menoufia University. Teams from Al Azhar Women’s University and Cairo University won third place in the competition. This is the fourth National Competition organized by the ABA in Egypt.
“Egyptian citizens and businesses need well-trained lawyers to assist them in protecting their legal rights,” said Sherry Carlin, Egypt Mission Director of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), which sponsors the program. “It is inspiring to see the commitment of these students to developing their arbitration skills.”
