BELGRADE – On September 19, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), a U.S. government agency, and the High Court Council (HCC) of Serbia celebrated the achievements of USAID’s “Institutional Strengthening of the High Court Council” activity—a $500,000 project to support Serbia’s judicial reform efforts.

“USAID’s support to the High Court Council in its effort to reform the judiciary has moved Serbia one step closer towards realizing the goals outlined in the Action Plan of the National Judicial Reform Strategy 2013-2018,” said Dragomir Milivojević, the President of the High Court Council.

“The High Court Council plays a central role in establishing an effective judiciary that serves the needs of the Serbian people,” said USAID Mission Director Azza El-Abd. “The United States has partnered with Serbia to strengthening the judiciary for more than a decade – ours is a longstanding partnership.”

Public Education Campaign on the Law on the Protection of Whistleblowers Launched

Belgrade - At a press conference on June 3, 2015, USAID’s Judicial Reform and Government Accountability Project and the Ministry of Justice launched an educational outreach campaign for the new Law on the Protection of Whistleblowers.  It serves to educate the public on important concepts under the new Law that incorporates added protection mechanisms to shield whistleblowers from retaliation.

USAID Launches Major New Civil Society Grant opportunity

On Friday, April 24, approximately 50 people from civil society organizations throughout Serbia attended USAID's post-solicitation conference for its newly announced Annual Program Statement, Serbian Civil Society Partners.  Through this second APS - which is essentially a standing, year-long call for proposals - USAID Serbia is soliciting applications from local NGOs to support democratic and economic development. USAID expects most grants to be in the range of $200-300,000 and be operational for a period of approximately two years.

Pilot Plant for New Food Product Development Opens in Leskovac

On April 22, 2015, the USAID Mission Director Azza El-Abd and Mayor of Leskovac Goran Cvetanovic opened a pilot plant for new food product development at the Food Technology Park (FTP) in Leskovac. USAID provided $90,000 for the establishment of pilot plant, to enable food processors to develop new and improved products in a cost-efficient way.

USAID and the Ana And Vlade Divac Foundation Launch new Divac Youth Fund Project

 On April 21, the Ana and Vlade Divac Foundation and USAID formally launched a new two-year Divac Youth funds project that will support youth projects in nine municipalities. What makes this project unique is that the project funds are managed by youth who decide about the priorities in their local communities.

Opening of Renovated Higher-, Basic-, and Misdemeanor Courts in Pirot

On Wednesday, April 1, 2015, the Minister of Justice Nikola Selaković, the U.S. Ambassador to Serbia Michael D. Kirby, and the Norwegian Ambassador to Serbia Nils Ragnar Kamsvåg, officially opened the newly renovated premises of the Higher, Basic and Misdemeanor Courts in Pirot. The President of the High Court Council and Supreme Court of Cassation as well as the Pirot Court Presidents will be in attendance.

Belgrade, March 3, 2015 – The USAID Business Enabling Project welcomes the Government of Serbia’s decision to formally adopt the Inspections Oversight Bill. Over the past four years, USAID has been cooperating with Government of Serbia, line Ministries and inspectorates and the business community to draft the bill. This law will establish modern inspections oversight standards and introduce global and European best practices in this field.
