BELGRADE – On September 19, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), a U.S. government agency, and the High Court Council (HCC) of Serbia celebrated the achievements of USAID’s “Institutional Strengthening of the High Court Council” activity—a $500,000 project to support Serbia’s judicial reform efforts.

“USAID’s support to the High Court Council in its effort to reform the judiciary has moved Serbia one step closer towards realizing the goals outlined in the Action Plan of the National Judicial Reform Strategy 2013-2018,” said Dragomir Milivojević, the President of the High Court Council.

“The High Court Council plays a central role in establishing an effective judiciary that serves the needs of the Serbian people,” said USAID Mission Director Azza El-Abd. “The United States has partnered with Serbia to strengthening the judiciary for more than a decade – ours is a longstanding partnership.”

Divac Foundation and USAID Bolster Serbian Response to European Migrant Crisis

On April 6, the Ana and Vlade Divac Foundation, in partnership with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), launched an 18-month, $700.000 project to support and improve capabilities of select local communities, volunteer organizations, and civil society organizations. The project is a direct response to the current European migration crisis. The project will also help municipalities to develop strategies and structures to respond to future man-made and natural crises.

Belgrade - On December 22, 2015, Ambassador, Michael D. Kirby; the Speaker of the Parliament, Maja Gojković; the Minister of Labor, Employment, Veteran, Disability and Social Issues, Aleksandar Vulin; and the Director of the Center for Independent Living, Gordana Rajkov; launched the Strengthening the Political Participation of Persons with Disabilities in Serbia project.  The 18-month project will be implemented in cooperation with the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia.

Ambassador Kirby to Open Ozone Jeans Finishing Facility in Novi Pazar

On December 18, 2015, Ambassador Michael D. Kirby, the Mayor of Novi Pazar Meho Mahmutović, and Assistant Minister for SME at the Ministry of Economy Katarina Obradović-Jovanović, formally opened the ozone jeans finishing facility in Novi Pazar.   

In June 2015, USAID Serbia supported six Novi Pazar denim producers that employ more than 400 workers and export to international markets, to establish an association called PRO-DENIM, and jointly use the ozone-based technology for jeans finishing.

USAID-Supported Business from Prokuplje Exports Traditional Frozen Serbian Pies to the United States

On December 17, Ambassador Michael D. Kirby visited the Hera company, a family owned business producing frozen baked goods, and met with its owners Vesna and Zoran Jevtović. Thanks to its collaboration with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the U.S. Embassy, the company has been able to acquire required certification, expand its markets and increase exports. In September 2015, Hera began exporting its products to the U.S. market.

USAID Recognizes Nine New Partners in Development
