Farmers across Kosovo gathered in Pristina to promote local produced strawberries on June 5 through June 8. The Strawberry Promotional Days are organized by USAID in partnership with Kosovo’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Development, to link Kosovo’s strawberry farmers with consumers. The promotional event should not only expand the market for fresh strawberries and jams, but also inspire more domestic farmers to begin cultivating the berries as well, according to officials.
Hundreds of school children in Kosovo marked World Milk Day on June 1 in downtown Pristina by enjoying free samples of locally produced milk, yogurt, cheese and ice cream. The annual event highlighted the gains Kosovo’s dairy industry continues to make in rebuilding since the 1998-’99 armed conflict. USAID plays a major role in those efforts.
International donors came together in Pristina for a May 14th conference on sustainable energy for Kosovo. The conference was hosted by the Kosovo government in cooperation with the World Bank and the European Union. The U.S. Coordinator of Assistance for Europe and Eurasia Daniel Rosenblum joined Joost Korte, EU Deputy Director-General of Enlargement, and Ellen Goldstein, World Bank Country Director for Southeast Europe, in pledging some $200 million to the development of Kosovo's energy sector.
USAID continues to assist the Kosovo Judicial Council and the courts to implement their reorganization efforts to improve court efficiency and transparency. The reform focuses on the implementation of procedural and administrative changes, as well as court facility upgrades.
In that regard, on May 13 Kosovo judicial leaders, together with representatives of the U.S. and Norway, inaugurated the newly renovated Lipjan/Lipljan Branch Court of the Pristina Basic Court.
High-bush blueberries are a fast-emerging crop with bright future and great marketing opportunities in the region. At present, there are around 20 small blueberry plantations in northern Kosovo, but current or potential growers face challenges such as a lack of technical knowledge, marketing and financial information, and advisory assistance.
