On October 1, 2012, the people of Georgia came out in record numbers for what turned out to be historic Parliamentary elections. Nearly ten years after the controversial Parliamentary elections in 2003 led to the Rose Revolution, Georgia’s President Saakashvili conceded that his party had been defeated by an opposition coalition in what was the country’s first peaceful and democratic transition of power. By achieving this milestone, Georgia set a regional example of commitment to democracy. In the lead-up to and during the next election cycle—which includes 2016 Parliamentary, 2017 local, and 2018 Presidential elections, USAID will continue to deepen and institutionalize Georgia’s electoral and political processes.

The SPEED project will conduct electoral and political process monitoring activities for the upcoming election cycle in Georgia which includes the 2016 parliamentary elections, the 2017 local elections, and the 2018 presidential elections. This project promotes equally accessible, competitive, and transparent electoral processes in Georgia for all. The project will promote independent investigations of criminal charges against political activists; monitor and evaluate law enforcement actions against electoral candidates; and provide legal support to approximately 10 independent municipal election candidates for politically motivated criminal and administrative cases.

Georgia's Reforms Associates (GRASS)br /> The purpose of FactCheck is to make political and electoral processes more competitive, deliberative, transparent and accountable. By monitoring the accuracy of statements made by political parties and elections candidates, FactCheck will increase the transparency and accountability of public officials, thereby contributing to increased confidence of Georgian citizens in the 2016 Parliamentary elections.
