The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and Irish Aid announced today a collaboration to provide funding to assist the development and adaption of technologies and business models required to transform the dairy sector in Ethiopia. The Dairy Innovation Fund will be used for the design, demonstration and field-testing of technologies and business models that can demonstrate high potential for increased commercialization of milk products.
Fistula is especially common in Ethiopia. In a recent USAID/AusAID-funded Fistula Situation Analysis in Ethiopia, it was estimated that approximately 3,500 women develop obstetric fistula annually, and as many as 37,500 women are living with untreated fistula cases. Building upon the findings of the situation analysis and in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Health and other key partners, the U.S. Government will support intensified identification and referral of women with obstetric fistula to specialist repair facilities.
It gives me the greatest honor and pleasure to be here today to pledge the U.S. Government’s support for the Government of Ethiopia’s unprecedented commitment to End Fistula and Transform Lives by 2020. We applaud the Federal Ministry of Health for its renewed focus on obstetric fistula and for taking the bold step of developing a Plan of Action to eliminate fistula by the year 2020.

The U.S. Government, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), held a ribbon cutting ceremony today for the Shashemane Farm Service Center (FSC). It is the sixth such center to open in Oromia Region, joining FSCs in Ambo, Bishoftu, Dodola, Fiche and Nekemte. The FSCs provide a complete range of supplies such as quality seeds, fertilizers, plant protection products, and veterinary products; information; and marketing links for Ethiopian smallholders, allowing them to make the step from subsistence to commercial production.
