It is widely known that Ethiopia is the birthplace of Arabica coffee and exports some of the highest quality coffee in the world, including many specialty coffees such as Yirgacheffe, Harar and Sidama. Despite this long history and unique coffee culture, the Ethiopian coffee value chain has yet to realize its full potential for increased growth especially for the benefit of smallholder farmers.

The Oromia Insurance Company (OIC), in collaboration with USAID and the International Livestock Research Institute, held a ceremony today to mark the first payout of the Index Based Livestock Insurance (IBLI) to 510 policy bearers in Yabello, Borena. IBLI is an insurance product that is designed to protect pastoralists from livestock loss resulting from prolonged drought.

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID), in collaboration with the Ministry of Education launched a national mother tongue reading curriculum to improve the reading skills of 15 million primary school students in Ethiopia. Minister of Education Shiferaw Shigute and USAID Mission Director Dennis Weller opened the event on the eve of the Ministry’s annual review meeting in Hawassa, Southern Nations, Nationalities and People’s Region.

It is great source of pride for me to be here and mark two decades of close cooperation between the United States Government and the Government of Ethiopia through the Ministry of Education and my agency, USAID. This collaboration to improve education quality and equitable access to learning have resulted in many more children in school, far fewer dropping out, improved student learning, and, very importantly, more girls in primary schools. So let me begin with congratulations to all of you and your predecessors on this very measurable progress.

The U.S. Government, through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID’s) Agricultural Growth Program-Livestock Market Development project (AGP-LMD), today held the fourth of four regional livestock investment forums in Mekelle. The forums connect foreign and local investors with 100 pre-selected local companies that have lucrative investment opportunities in dairy, meat and live animal business.
