GARI MAYBERRY

Gari Mayberry Headshot

Gari Mayberry is USAID/OFDA’s Geoscience Advisor, on loan from the U.S. Geological Survey. Tasked with monitoring geological hazards ¬— like earthquakes and volcanoes— and evaluating risk, Gari makes recommendations which inform USAID/OFDA’s response and strategy to potential dangers. For 12 years, Gari has worked with USAID/OFDA developing risk reduction strategy and offering technical assistance as part of the USAID/OFDA and USGS-funded Volcano Disaster Assistance Program (VDAP), the only international response team that can deploy to help prevent eruptions from becoming disasters, currently celebrating its 30th anniversary. Gari joined USAID/OFDA because of her interest in humanitarian work and desire to apply her technical knowledge and skill directly to helping reduce the geological hazard risk many people around the world face. Having served on the response management teams for the 2010 earthquake in Haiti and the 2011 Japan earthquake and tsunami, she currently focuses on projects aimed at reducing the risk from geological events using innovative and sustainable methods.

In addition, USAID/OFDA works to improve safety and security within the humanitarian community, especially since our disaster experts and partners frequently operate in some of the most insecure countries around the world. The Safety and Security Update has more about how USAID/OFDA enables disaster response while minimizing the risk to humanitarians.
