Transforming Lives

Every day, all over the world, USAID brings peace to those who endure violence, health to those who struggle with sickness, and prosperity to those who live in poverty. It is these individuals — these uncounted thousands of lives — that are the true measure of USAID’s successes and the true face of USAID's programs.

The Burgunske Farm in Ukraine’s Kherson oblast may finally realize a long-held ambition to become the leading fruit producer of the region. The farm increased its area of irrigated land fourfold—from 115 hectares to between 430 and 545 hectares—by constructing a new water supply pipeline.

Hanna*, a former injection drug user and person living with HIV in Ukraine, was diagnosed with tuberculosis (TB) in 2008. When she was arrested in 2009, she had already undergone three months of TB treatment. She initially served her time at a specialized TB penal colony in Ternopil and then moved to a regular female penal colony in Kharkiv oblast.

The Serbian Government has made strides in supporting LGBTI rights, most visibly by permitting the Belgrade Pride Parade to take place in 2014 and 2015. The recent parades were largely peaceful, in stark contrast to several previous years when threats of violence caused the event’s cancellation. Though the recent parades were successful for the most part, a number of issues still exist.

Në kopshtin e fëmijëve “Lane” në komunën e Zveçanit, 300 fëmijë mësojnë, luajnë së bashku dhe eksplorojnë botën e tyre me shumë energji dhe kurreshtje. Pavarësisht një mjedisi të shkëlqyer për mësim, pas inspektimit sanitar të kuzhinës kopshti “Lane” është përballur me kërcënimin e mbylljes. Kuzhina thjesht nuk plotësonte standardet minimale të sigurisë së ushqimit.

U vrtiću „LANE“, u kosovskoj opštini Zvečan, 330 mališana se igra i uči zajedno, radoznalo istražujući svet oko sebe. Međutim, uprkos odličnom okruženju za učenje, vrtić „Lane“ se prošle godine, nakon posete sanitarne inspekcije, suočio sa potencijalnim zatvaranjem. Kuhinja jednostavno nije ispunjavala minimalne standarde bezbednosti hrane.

Vira Varyga, an HIV activist in Ukraine, is also a trainer and facilitator at Kyianka+, a self-support and empowerment group for HIV-positive women. She is also HIV-positive, and the associated feelings of stigma and discrimination are familiar to her.

Living with severe cerebral palsy made it difficult for Nguyen Minh Hao, 31, to take care of his daily needs. Getting out of bed and personal hygiene were impossible without his mother’s help. As they both grew older, it become more challenging for his mother, his only caregiver, to get Hao in and out of bed for daily activities. He spent most of his time lying in bed, unable to do to anything.
