Power Africa in Eritrea

Eritrea Electricity Profile: 160mw currently installed, 32% access, 17% rural

Eritrea’s power is supplied through oil-based power plants. Electricity is available only at larger cities through the Eritrean Electricity Authority, a vertically integrated utility. Electricity access remains low particularly due to the large number of rural villages that do not have electricity. About 90% of the installed generation capacity is from two diesel power plants (Hirgigo 132 MW and Belaza 17 MW). The existing distribution network is old and frequently fails. Based on 2013 data, Eritrea’s national electrification rate reached 32%, (17% in rural areas, 86% in urban areas).
