The U.S. Agency for International Development today shared the final results of its cutting-edge integrated health and nutrition program for Nepal. The five year, $57 Million “Suaahara” project (2011-2016), implemented by a consortium of organizations managed by Save the Children, benefitted more than 2.4 million Nepalis in 41 districts. Over the life of the project, Suaahara steadily improved the nutrition and health practices of socially excluded and marginalized groups, particularly pregnant women and children under 2.
U.S. Ambassador to Nepal Alaina B. Teplitz and Minister for Health and Population Ram Janam Chaudhary jointly unveiled plans to rebuild a new, earthquake-safe Bahrabise Primary Health Care Center (PHCC), today. The $1.9 million joint collaboration is funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and will be implemented by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), bringing together the Army Corps architectural and engineering know-how and USAID’s public health expertise. The project includes demolishing the existing buildings, reconstruction of the PHCC, and fully equipping it according to Ministry of Health standards.
The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) signed awards for five new development programs, totaling $121 million.
Officials from the National Centre for AIDS and STD Control (NCASC) and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) distributed the 100 millionth condom that USAID-funded HIV projects – including the current Saath-Saath project – have cumulatively delivered in Nepal since 1993. The Government of Nepal, in partnership with the U.S. Government, will contribute to improving the reading skills of one million public primary students (grades 1 to 3) in16 districts of Nepal through the U.S. Agency for International Development’s (USAID) new five-year, $53.8 million Early Grade Reading Program. Based on lessons learned from this program, an evidence-based early grade reading model will be scaled up nationally.
