The purpose of the Liberia Administrative and Systems Strengthening program is to work with the National Elections Commission (NEC) to develop and build sustainable and relevant institutional changes in response to the NEC’s specific needs. LASS will support the NEC in its efforts to strengthen its managerial and administrative capabilities, systems, policies and procedures, using the Problem Driven Iterative Adaptation (PDIA) approach.  The ultimate goal is to help the NEC put in place strong systems to better achieve its core mandate of planning and conducting elections.

The Liberia International Election Observation (LIEO) Activity aims to enhance the integrity of the polls by conducting impartial and continuous monitoring of all phases of the election process, providing information on the polls for the Liberian public and international partners and demonstrating international support for democratic elections in Liberia. By increasing timely access to information about the election process, the international election observation assessment mission aims to facilitate early responses to emerging issues and contribute to building confidence in the credibility of the electoral process.

In 2008, Liberia was selected as one of the 19 focus countries benefiting from the President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI), which is led by USAID and implemented together with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. PMI was launched in June 2005 as a 5-year, $1.2 billion initiative to rapidly scale up malaria prevention and treatment interventions and reduce malaria-related mortality by 50 percent in high-burden countries in sub-Saharan Africa.

Working with thousands of community-based entrepreneurs and leaders from 11 Community Forests in Nimba and Grand Bassa counties, the Forest Incomes for Environmental Sustainability (FIFES) initiative protects biodiversity through profitable, responsible, and legally implemented forestry, agroforestry, and related natural resources management. FIFES strengthens selected forest and agricultural value chains, establish legal and management frameworks for forest enterprises, and enhance knowledge and skills for forest enterprises and landscape management.
