U.S. Charge d’Affaires, Brian McFeeters and Special Advisor to Minister of the Environment and Forestry, Agus Justianto, launched two new initiatives to improve natural resource management in Central Kalimantan: U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) LESTARI, the flagship forestry management program that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase biodiversity conservation; and the Sister Protected Areas Partnership, a USAID funded partnership between the U.S. Department of Interior (DOI), Indonesia’s Ministry of the Environment and Forestry, and the Sebangau and Tanjung Puting National Parks.
The United States Government, through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), launched a US $250 million dollar portfolio of projects to support environmental protection and disaster resiliency in Indonesia over the next five years. At a reception in his Jakarta home, U.S. Ambassador to Indonesia Robert Blake linked the new initiatives to global concern about the negative impacts of climate change.
The United States Government, through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and the Center for International Forestry (CIFOR) have launched a partnership to address critical environmental issues in Indonesia concerning forestry management and biodiversity protection. The partnership will include collaborative research and providing scholarships for emerging Indonesian leaders to attend U.S. universities.
The U.S Agency for International Development will offer funding through its Partnerships for Enhanced Engagement in Research (PEER) program for Indonesian scientists to conduct research on climate change, education and wildlife trafficking. Applications are now open, and proposals are due January 15, 2016.
U.S. Ambassador to Indonesia Robert O. Blake, Jr. announced that the United States will contribute an initial $2.75 million USD in assistance to support Indonesian efforts to address the effects of the forest fires and haze.
