United States Senator James Inhofe (R-OK), while visiting the Project Mercy site today in the Chacha District of the Northern Shewa Zone, Amhara Region, delivered pregnant cross-bred dairy heifers to selected household dairy farmers in the district. The heifers were funded through a partnership between Project Mercy and the U.S. Government, through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
More than 200 business leaders, domestic and foreign investors, and government officials attended Ethiopia’s first Agribusiness Investment Forum today. Funded by USAID through its Ethiopia Sustainable Agribusiness Incubator activity, the Forum highlighted lucrative opportunities in the sesame, dairy and honey sectors and featured 18 existing and up-and-coming entrepreneurs who demonstrated their products and services.
At 110 meters below sea level in the Dallol depression, the Afdera Woreda (district) in the Afar Region is located in one of the deepest inhabited places on the planet. Afdera’s ground water is saline. Geo-physical and hydrological investigations show that there is virtually no chance of getting fresh water in the area. Water for local communities is trucked 220 kilometers from Logya with Afdera residents paying 20 birr (approximately $1.05) for a 20-liter jeri-can of water. Sometimes, it is impossible to get water at this price because the water supply and transportation is unreliable. Hence, local communities in the area are forced to use water from an open and salty source for domestic use.
The U.S. Government, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Commercial Farm Service Program, held a ribbon cutting ceremony today for Bishoftu Farm Service Center (FSC) —the first of six such centers in Oromia Region.
