TIRANA, APRIL 8, 2011     Today, USAID organized a conference to announce the start-up of a new health reform project in Albania.  The U.S. Ambassador to Albania, Alexander Arvizu, Albania’s Prime Minister, Sali Berisha, and the Minister of Health, Petrit Vasili, delivered remarks at the opening of the conference.  USAID Enabling Equitable Health Reforms (EEHR) project is a five-year initiative that will increase access to essential health services for the poor and support national health policy reforms.

TIRANA, MARCH 23, 2011     Today, USAID’s local governance program in Albania held a national conference with representatives from Albanian cities, non-governmental representatives, and private enterprises to present and discuss best practices to support good governance and economic growth for Albanian cities.  The U.S. Embassy Chargé d’Affaires, Deborah Jones, President of the Republic of Albania, Bamir Topi, and Deputy Minister of Interior, Ferdinand Poni, delivered remarks at the opening ceremony of the conference.

FIER, MARCH 18, 2011     Today, the Municipality of Fier opened a new public information office, supported by USAID.  Citizens with questions on local taxes, public works, permits and licenses, or social services can now come to the municipalities newly renovated office for quick answers and advice.  The Municipality hopes to increase citizen satisfaction with municipal services and improve transparency.

TIRANA , MARCH 7, 2011     Last week, USAID, in partnership with Albania’s National Chamber of Advocates (NCA), published the first comprehensive collection of the fundamental legal acts that regulate the functioning of the legal profession in Albania.

TIRANA, MARCH 1, 2011     Today, U.S. Ambassador Alexander A. Arvizu and Albanian Prime Minister Sali Berisha inaugurated the new Tirana Taxpayer Service Center.  Established with the assistance of the American people through the Millennium Challenge Corporation Albania Threshold Program II, the center provides tax services and information for all businesses operating in Tirana.

The center opened December 1, 2010, and since that time, up to 1,000 taxpayers a day have been visiting the facility.  Since opening, the center has served almost 50,000 customers.
