LGBTI Programs

The LGBTI Global Development Partnership

The LGBTI Global Development Partnership (LGBTI-GDP) is a first-of-its-kind public-private partnership. It leverages the financial and technical contributions of corporations, bilateral donors, foundations, NGOs, and universities to support LGBTI human rights and development in 14 countries around the world.  Funding and implementing partners include USAID; Sida; Arcus Foundation; Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice; Gay & Lesbian Victory Institute; Williams Institute; Swedish Federation for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer Rights; and the National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce.  The LGBTI-GDP empowers LGBTI communities by strengthening the capacity of LGBTI leaders and civil society organizations; training LGBTI leaders to effectively participate in democratic processes and run organizations; conducting research to inform national, regional, and global policy and programs; and promoting economic empowerment through enhanced LGBTI entrepreneurship and business development.

HIV AIDS & PEPFAR

For over 20 years, USAID has supported HIV/AIDS programming, currently focused on research of the disease, effective program models for targeted prevention, and care and treatment services for high-risk populations. Programming also supports the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and other donors.

Being LGBT in Asia

"Being LGBT in Asia” is a groundbreaking, first-of-its-kind initiative to support Asia’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people. It works to bolster basic LGBT rights across the continent and in specific focus countries, raising the profile of regional organizations and institutions in addressing LGBT rights issues. It is supported by USAID, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the Embassy of Sweden in Bangkok.

Human Rights Grants Program

The Center of Excellence on Democracy, Human Rights and Governance (DRG) in the Bureau for Democracy, Conflict, and Humanitarian Assistance provides funding for LGBTI program via the Human Rights Grants Program (HRGP). HRGP gives financial and technical support to missions to assist in program design and assessments and provide funding and on-the-ground support for program implementation, on-site visits, and training.

  • Health: Thailand’s HIV clinics target high-risk groups through social media to promote testing and enhance clinic services on privacy.
  • Housing: USAID/Albania assistance has worked with two LGBTI organizations to plan for and finance a pilot LGBTI Shelter. In collaboration with partnerships from the United Kingdom, the two organizations began planning necessary steps to open Albania’s first LGBTI shelter in 2014.
  • Political Participation: The LGBTI Global Development Partnership has undertaken a variety of trainings to strengthen LGBTI political participation. Political participation trainings have taken place in Peru, Serbia and Colombia and are designed to build the skills of LGBTI leaders interested in participating in democratic processes. Each convening included outreach to political parties and engagement with the broader LGBTI communities through civil society forums.
