USAID works to mitigate the impact and spread of Tanzania’s HIV/AIDS epidemic in partnership with the Government of Tanzania, other U.S. Government agencies, and a wide range of other partners through the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). USAID and its partners support national multi-sectoral efforts in HIV prevention, treatment, care, and health systems strengthening to achieve the goal of an AIDS-free generation.

USAID also leads an interagency voluntary male circumcision initiative that helps to prevent and diminish the spread of the disease, and provides treatment, care, and support to HIV-positive individuals and their families. In USAID-supported regions during FY 2015, 143,000 existing patients continued receiving lifesaving antiretroviral therapy to slow the spread of HIV, while over 36,000 patients began such therapy for the first time. During the same period, USAID supported the delivery of care and support services to over 162,000 infected adults and children, as well as over 712,000 orphans and vulnerable children.

USAID supports the Government of Tanzania in reaching the 90-90-90 global goals: 90 percent of HIV-positive individuals diagnosed, 90 percent of those diagnosed on antiretroviral therapy, and 90 percent of those receiving therapy virally suppressed by 2020. In support of these outcomes, the Government of Tanzania has directed health facilities to adopt “test and start” services, whereby patients diagnosed as HIV-positive begin treatment immediately upon diagnosis.
