U.S. food aid supports communities displaced by conflict

The United States remains South Sudan’s leading donor of humanitarian assistance, including responding to immediate food needs, ramping up distribution of food items and specialty nutrition supplements for children suffering from malnutrition, and supporting programs that address chronic food insecurity by providing seeds, tools and fishing kits to help displaced and other conflict-affected people plant crops and meet basic food needs.

CONFLICT MITIGATION

USAID is supporting local peace and conflict mitigation efforts and has shifted the geographic focus of conflict mitigation activities to include urban flashpoints, pursuing a community-based approach focused on supporting communities and influential individuals to constructively mitigate and manage conflict. The objectives of USAID’s conflict mitigation activities are to increase space and tools to manage conflict and tensions; build cross-line interdependency to promote peaceful coexistence, such as through trade; promote a more informed community; and engage communities in trauma awareness to lay the foundation for healing and reconciliation by breaking cycles of violence.
