The South Africa Department of Science and Technology signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the U.S. Global Development Lab, the newest bureau within USAID, to support the growing partnership between South Africa and the United States in using science, technology and innovation as important tools for advancing development. The signing ceremony was held during the USAID Global Science, Technology, Innovation and Partnership Summit at the USAID/Southern Africa headquarters in Pretoria.
Prior to serving in South Africa, Alonzo served as USAID’s Deputy Mission Director in Iraq from October 2013 to November 2014. From September 2011 to October 2013 he served in the Africa Bureau as Regional Advisor and de-facto Deputy Office Director for Southern Africa Affairs, and then Acting Office Director.
Lit Tazewell began his assignment as the Deputy Mission Director for USAID/Southern Africa for in August 2012. Mr. Tazewell has responsibility for regional programs which increase trade and strengthen regional economic ties, address the HIV/AIDS crisis, mitigate food insecurity, and support democratic processes. USAID’s regional program is headquartered in Pretoria, South Africa, and complements country-specific programs by addressing cross-border issues and common development needs.
Cheryl L. Anderson joined USAID/Southern Africa as Mission Director in August 2013. Prior to arriving in Pretoria, Anderson served as Mission Director in USAID/Ghana from 2009 to 2013, and was the director of the USAID East Africa Regional Mission in Kenya from 2006 to 2009.
USAID is working in partneship with the South African government to provide support to SA's Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions that are expected to rise dramatically due to the growing economy that is dependent on fossil fuel.
