More than two decades after the end of apartheid, South Africa plays a key economic and political role on the continent. There are also many challenges, including unemployment, HIV/AIDS, crime, and corruption. USAID programs seek to provide HIV/AIDS care, prevention and treatment; strengthen small and medium-sized enterprises; promote basic education; and combat gender-based violence. Total U.S. foreign assistance to South Africa for FY 2016 was $459.7 M.
