The U.S. Embassy is pleased to introduce the 40 young South Africans who will participate in the 2015 Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders.
This is the second group of outstanding young South Africans to participate in the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders. This diverse group of young leaders comes from eight of South Africa’s provinces and their areas of interest fall into business and entrepreneurship, civic leadership, or public management.
In June, these Fellows will travel to the U.S. to begin training at one of twenty prestigious U.S. universities. After this six week academic period concludes they, along with 460 other Young African Leaders from throughout sub-Saharan Africa, will have acquired extensive leadership development training and networking opportunities with other young leaders from sub-Saharan Africa and the United States. They will then travel to Washington, D.C. to participate in a three-day Mandela Washington Fellowship Presidential Summit hosted by President Barack Obama.
While in Washington D.C. the participants will have the opportunity to interact with U.S. leaders in business, government, and the non-profit sector. A small number of Fellows will remain in the United States for professional development opportunities at U.S. companies, non-profit organizations, or government agencies.
“I share President Obama’s vision for the Mandela Washington Fellowship and believe that their commitment, courage, and ‘yes, we can’ attitude will lead South Africa and sub-Saharan Africa into a new age of prosperity as it takes its place on the world stage,” said Ambassador Patrick Gaspard.
