On December 3, Lisa Franchett was sworn in as the new Director of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) in Senegal. The ceremony, the first ever for the Senegal mission to be held in Dakar, was presided over by U.S. Ambassador James P. Zumwalt. The outgoing Mission Director Susan Fine, who will continue her work with USAID as a senior advisor based in Washington, DC, as well as Franchett’s family and the staff also graced the occasion. Ms. Franchett will lead both the Senegal bilateral mission and the Sahel Regional Office, which works to build resilience in Mauritania, Niger, Chad and Burkina Faso.
On September 15, the United States through the U.S. Agency for Development (USAID) and the Government of Senegal signed extensions of their current assistance agreements on various areas of intervention supported by USAID, estimated at $466 million (233 billion francs CFA), through the year 2020.
Dakar, September 10, 2015 - A public/private partnership between the University Cheikh Anta Diop of Dakar and the Agri-Food Platform of Senegal’s Professional Organizations (POPAS) that helped train almost 60 people demonstrates the role and the centrality of research and training in the development of the private sector and economic growth, the Director of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), Ms Susan Fine, said.
“Seed quality is the backbone of agricultural productivity,” U.S. Ambassador to Senegal James P. Zumwalt said on September 2 as he joined local authorities and representatives of the agricultural sector to inaugurate a new Seed Treatment Center in Kaolack, Senegal’s breadbasket for cultivation of cereals like millet, maize and sorghum.
