Since 1998, USAID has been one of the leading donors in HIV assistance to Nicaragua working closely with the Government of Nicaragua, private sector, and local non-governmental organizations, particularly in health system strengthening. In 2010, the Central America region and the Government of the United States started the Partnership Framework for Central America (2010-2014) with funds from theEmergency Plan of the President for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), which is an initiative of the President of the United States to help save the lives of those who suffer from HIV/AIDS around the world. Between 1998 and 2016, USAID has invested more than $120 million in Nicaraguan health assistance, of which $21 million has been allocated to HIV/AIDS prevention and care.

Currently, through USAID’s regional activities, it supports an increase in healthy behaviors to reduce HIV/AIDS transmission among the most at-risk populations through institutional strengthening of non-governmental organizations working on the topic, prevention services, anti-stigma and discrimination campaigns and participation in the national response to HIV/AIDS.

USAID is also engaged in efforts to combat the spread of Zika in Nicaragua. The World Health Organization has declared the Zika virus and associated health threats an international public health emergency.  Zika is now in more than 30 countries in the region, including Nicaragua.
