On June 28, 2013, representatives of USAID’s Office of Transition Initiatives (USAID/OTI) together with local government officials and residents of Talas celebrated the opening of the newly rehabilitated Talas Local Crime Prevention Center (LCPC) #2.

Serving a district of 8,600 residents, the LCPC #2 brings together community leaders and citizens to address public safety concerns and carry out crime prevention activities.  To expand its public outreach efforts by holding community meetings for public safety discussions in the neighborhood, USAID/OTI renovated the LCPC two-room office, provided office furniture, and developed booklets on the activities of the LCPC to be used during the community meetings.

This support to the Talas LCPC #2 is one of several activities USAID/OTI has implemented in Talas.  Last year, USAID/OTI supported the rehabilitation of a mini-soccer field and the Kirk Choro Cinema.  More recently, USAID/OTI renovated the Talas City Council session hall, provided equipment to the Talas Ombudsman’s Office, and supported a local civil society actor to monitor local government engagement with citizens.  These activities increase the City Council’s capacity to hold public meetings and engage citizens in local decision making.  Importantly, they empower the Ombudsman’s office to respond to human rights issues.
