USAID Observes World AIDS Day in Kyrgyzstan

For Immediate Release

Monday, December 2, 2013

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) organized a series of public events throughout the Kyrgyzstan in observance of World AIDS Day. These events were conducted in Bishkek and Osh cities, and in Jalalabad and Chui oblasts. According to the data from Republican AIDS Center in Kyrgyzstan published in November 2013, 5,060 of people living with HIV are registered in the country, but experts estimate that the actual number is even higher.

HIV is transmitted in Kyrgyzstan primarily through the shared use of needles/syringes and equipment by people who inject drugs, who make up 57 % of all HIV cases. In the Sokuluk region near the capital Bishkek, USAID representatives, government officials, clinic staff, and methadone clinic patients gathered to share stories and experiences.  There was a heated discussion about the difficulties that drug users face when attempting to visit the clinic, and the lack of legal protection they face in their communities. Representatives of NGOs that provide outreach were able to speak directly and honestly to those that had gathered, encouraging them to know their rights and describing how to access services.

The USAID “Dialogue on HIV and TB Project” provides technical assistance, training, and direct outreach services to increase access to quality HIV and TB prevention and treatment services among at-risk populations.  The program is implemented by a consortium of non-governmental organizations led by Population Services International and includes Project HOPE, and the AIDS Foundation East-West (AFEW).

This program is one of the many assistance projects supported by the American people through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).  For additional information about USAID, please visit our website: www.usaid.gov or https://www.facebook.com/USAIDKyrgyzRepublic
