Bahir Dar, Ethiopia - On October 13, 2012, USAID launched its new five-year Strengthening Human Resources for Health (HRH) project in Bahir Dar, capital of Amhara Region. Minister of Health Tedros Adhanom, State MInister of Health Kebede Worku, USAID Mission Director Dennis Weller, and HRH Project Director Dr. Damtew Dagoye engaged the audience of health and education officials from around the country.
The project's primary goal is to increase the availability of capable health professionals at all levels of health care in the country to reduce infectious diseases such as Malaria, TB, HIV/AIDS and maternal, newborn and child sickness and death. The project plans to train more than 5,500 midwives, 2,000 anesthetists, and 8,000 health extension workers while upgrading current health workers through in service training.
