I am very happy to be here today to mark the handover of more than 5.5 million English language textbooks for students in primary grades 2, 3 and 4. Since 2009, USAID had been working very closely with the Ministry of Education to provide appropriate, quality textbooks and learning materials to students and teachers. These textbooks, and associated teacher training and support for using the textbooks, were made possible by joining Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University (AAMU) with the Ministry of Education.
USAID Ethiopia Mission Director Dennis Weller presented to Ethiopia’s State Minister of Education, Fuad Ibrahim, 5.5 million English language textbooks for primary school children in grades 2, 3, and 4 at a handover ceremony on November 29 at the Ministry of Education. USAID’s Textbooks and Learning Materials Program (TLMP) developed the textbooks in cooperation with Ethiopia’s Ministry of Education. USAID printed the large amount of textbooks in order to allow every child in grades 2, 3, and 4 to have access to the learning material. Previously, USAID has developed, printed, and donated English textbooks for other primary school grades.
I am honored to be here to mark another milestone in USAID’s support to Ethiopia for land administration and land tenure. This issue is a cornerstone for Ethiopia’s growth and transformation plan for land management and land tenure is linked to peace and governance, to agricultural productivity and food security, to conservation of natural resources, and matters to the majority of Ethiopians who reside and farm around the country, and especially to women who are heads of households.
In collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, USAID and implementing partners held a two-day National Experience Sharing Workshop from November 26 to 27, 2012, in Addis Ababa on USAID’s Strengthening Land Administration Program (ELAP). The workshop participants included high ranking officials and experts of the Land Administration and Use Directorate of the Ministry of Agriculture and state land administration bureaus and agencies of the Afar, Amhara, Oromia, Somali, Tigray and Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples regions.
As part of President Obama’s Feed the Future Initiative in Ethiopia, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) launched a new five-year project called Livestock Market Development in support of the Government of Ethiopia’s Agricultural Growth Plan (AGP). State Minister of Agriculture Sileshi Getahun and USAID Ethiopia Mission Director Dennis Weller presided over the launch attended by federal and regional government officials, livestock industry representatives, and implementing partners.
