The United States recognizes Burma’s recent reform efforts as the most significant opportunity in decades to engage with the people of Burma and their government in the pursuit of democracy, peace and human rights. Burma faces complex, simultaneous and multi-dimensional transitions: from authoritarian rule to democracy; from armed conflict to peace; and from a centrally managed, planned economy to market-led economic policies.
U.S. foreign assistance deepens Burma’s political and economic transition; strengthens human rights; ensures that reform benefits everyday people; and supports the development of a stable society that reflects the diversity of the country.
Burma has embarked on a long and challenging road of political and economic reform. The reforms that began in 2011 have set in motion ongoing transitions that will see important developments over the coming year including the election on November 8th, ongoing ceasefire negotiations with ethnic armed groups, the treatment of Rohingya, and the changing strength and vibrancy of civil society. The United States has a fundamental interest in the success of Burma’s reforms and remains a committed partner to those who seek greater freedom, prosperity and dignity in Burma.
