Officials at Gender-Based Violence Forum in Botswana

For one week, high-ranking officials from ten countries in Africa came together in Gaborone to devise solutions to address gender-based violence and human trafficking. The innovative forum, jointly hosted by the International Law Enforcement Agency (ILEA) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), gathered police commissioners, judges, and chief prosecutors from Botswana, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Namibia, Rwanda, Seychelles, South Africa, and Swaziland to share best practices and build a strong network for continued work together.

The U.S. Government through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) yesterday pledged $127 million as part of an integrated response to El Niño drought relief. With this announcement, the United States has provided nearly $300 million in humanitarian assistance to the region and has also invested over $200 million in longer-term development interventions. These efforts will mitigate the drought’s impact and build resilience in Southern Africa through agricultural production, environment, health, livestock, trade, and water and sanitation programs.
