As part of Vietnam’s formal commitment to join the TPP, Vietnam signed the Plan for the Enhancement of Trade and Labor Relations, a bilateral agreement with the United States. This Plan supplements commitments made under the TPP’s Chapter 19 on labor and recognizes Vietnam’s commitment to revising the 2012 Labor Code. The 2012 Labor Code requires numerous changes to better address employment contracts, wages, working hours, labor discipline regulations, and the needs of Vietnam’s diverse labor force. On September 8-9, the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs (MOLISA) and the USAID Governance for Inclusive Growth (GIG) program presented the 2012 Labor Code gap analysis. The results of this workshop will help MOLISA improve the implementation of labor laws and regulations in Vietnam. A new draft code will be submitted to the National Assembly in 2017.
