Friday, June 30, 2017
USAID is working closely with Vietnam’s Ministry of Defense to complete environmental remediation of dioxin contamination at Da Nang International Airport. The first phase of high temperature, thermal treatment was successfully completed in 2015. The recently completed second phase of treatment has produced excellent results with residual contaminants in the treated soil measuring less than 1 part per trillion (ppt), well below the treatment goal of 150 ppt. In the next 2 months, approximately 90,000 cubic meters of treated soil will be returned to general use as common fill for airport expansion. So what? The project’s success is helping protect human health and represents another step towards fully resolving war legacy issues.
