A recent review by the Ministry of Justice (MOJ) revealed that the quality of legal aid services was poor in remote areas. To improve this situation, the USAID Governance for Inclusive Growth Program and MOJ recently trained legal counselors from these areas in the southern provinces of Vietnam. The training focused on the knowledge and skills needed to effectively counsel ethnic minorities, people with disabilities, people with HIV/AIDS, women and children, as well as cases dealing with civil, criminal, marriage and family law issues. So what? With improved capacity, legal counselors will provide higher quality services and reduce the barriers to accessing legal aid services in order to protect the rights of vulnerable groups in Vietnam.
