Mpumalanga: In August 2007 South Africa’s Mpumalanga Department of Health and Social Services (DOHSS) asked the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) to support the implementation of a new drug warehouse. The aim includes supplying and installing equipment, helping to develop standard operating procedures, and training warehouse staff.

CHALLENGE

Helping young South Africans achieve their potential demands a greater investment in literacy skills of primary grade learners in a rural areas.  This challenge is being addressed through enhancing teachers’ skills and recruiting and training community members to serve as literacy volunteers.

CHALLENGE

Improving primary grade reading is critically important to the success of South African children. In order to maximize student achievement, teachers must have the skills to deliver quality education. To improve primary grade reading outcomes, Ukusiza will strengthen teacher professional development by developing and distributing high-quality digital teacher training content.

CHALLENGE

South Africa has a rapidly growing economy that is highly dependent on fossil fuels.  As the economic status of individuals improves, the demand on already strained energy production and associated greenhouse gas emissions is expected to increase dramatically. The USG aims to assist the Government of South Africa to move towards achievement of the ambitious emissions reduction targets it announced in November 2011 in the National Climate Change Response White Paper.

CHALLENGE

While South Africa has dramatically improved access to education over the past decade, the quality of education remains very poor. TARMII-FP will work to address this problem by providing teachers with a computer-based assessment tool that will help teachers to more effectively address individual student learning needs in reading.
