USDOE/NREL Laboratory Expert Technical Support for Global Climate Change and Clean Energy

USDOE/NREL Laboratory Expert Technical Support for Global Climate Change and Clean Energy

The activities under the US Department of Energy (DOE) Laboratory Expert Technical Support for Global Climate Change and Clean Energy are being implemented through the US National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) for a period of two years, from 2012-2014. There are three major tasks under this component:

Capacity Building and Support to the GPH LEDS Process

  • Technical trainings for LEDS resource book development
  • Technical trainings on business-as-usual and forecasting
  • Support two technical trainings on multimetrics analysis for LEDS development impacts

Renewable Energy Resource Assessments and Visualization Tools

  • Evaluation of the status of current renewable energy resource data and assessments including global data sets,
  • Development of GeoSpatial Toolkit (GsT) that will integrate demographic, infrastructure, and land use data; ,
  • Joint analysis using the GsTto build capacity in EC-LEDS planning; and
  • Evaluation of existing wind resource assessments.

Clean Energy Policy Planning Support and Training

  • Grid impact studies to validate assessments on grid reliability and ancillary requirements; and
  • Analysis of other potential technical barriers to the integration of renewables into the grid.

SNAPSHOT

In November 2011, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed between the U.S. Government (USG) and the Philippine Climate Change Commission (CCC) to further cooperation under the Enhancing Capacity for Low Emission Development Strategies (EC-LEDS) program with the goal being to support LEDS development in the Philippines. Three priority areas of cooperation were outlined in the MOU:

  • GHG Inventories
  • Analytical Tools for Decision Making
  • Measurable Implementation Progress

The approved work plan emerging from a multi-stakeholder workshop has four major pillars:

  1. Enhanced coordination and support to the LEDS process
  2. Development or enhancement of the National GHG inventory system
  3. Analytical decision making
  4. Measurable implementation progress in key areas

GOAL
Contribute to enhanced coordination and support to the LEDS process and promote analytical decision making in LEDS development

IMPLEMENTATION PERIOD
August 2012 – August 2014
