U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Mission Director Jerry Bisson joined President of Pakistan Mamnoon Hussain today for the inauguration ceremony of the USAID-funded $1.5 million Faculty of Education building at the Karakoram International University (KIU).  KIU Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Khalil Ahmed was also present at the event.

The newly constructed building is one of the 17 Faculties of Education buildings that USAID has constructed or rehabilitated in order to train Pakistan’s next generation of teachers and education professionals.  These facilities will serve over 6,500 students and over 500 faculty members each year.

President Hussain acknowledged USAID’s role in promoting access to high-quality education in the province and throughout Pakistan through infrastructure support.  He also recognized the significance of having a modern Faculty of Education and the need to prepare well-trained educators in Pakistan.

Twenty Pakistani engineers,  including five women from power generation companies nationwide, received certificates today for completing a thermal operations and maintenance training program funded by the U.S. government.   Since March, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has provided training to 60 engineers from Jamshoro, Guddu and Muzaffargarh thermal power plants. The training enhanced the engineers’ technical skills and introduced them to industry best practices to improve the operation, maintenance, and management of power plants.

United States Empowers Future Teachers through University Scholarships

Today the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) awarded scholarships to 26 students enrolled in undergraduate degree programs at the International Islamic University (IIU) in Islamabad as part of the $165 million Pakistan Reading Project. The scholarships will pay for tuition and supplies as well as provide a stipend to recipients. The U.S. Government will provide more than 4,500 scholarships to aspiring teachers.

U.S. Training Helps Power Plant Engineers Improve Energy Efficiency

Twenty Pakistani engineers from power generation companies around the country were presented with certificates of completion after participating in a thermal operations and maintenance training  program funded  by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) at a ceremony in Islamabad on April 10.  The course is designed to help engineers further develop their technical skills and provide them with industry best practices in order to improve the operation, maintenance, and management of power plants.

U.S. Ambassador Richard Olson visited Muzaffarabad today to highlight the United States' support for bilateral trade opportunities, educational exchange, and development programs in Azad Jammu and Kashmir. Ambassador Olson's visit, his first to the region, was an opportunity to renew ties with the government leadership of AJK and to meet with local residents. "Today's visit is an important opportunity for me to see the enduring partnership of the United States with the people of Azad Jammu and Kashmir," Olson said.

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Punjab Provincial Director Jeffrey Bakken and Intel Pakistan Country Manager Naveed Siraj signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) today on the use of technology to support education and women’s economic empowerment in Pakistan.
