WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and Intel Corporation announced an expansion of their ongoing collaboration to utilize technology to further economic and social development around the world. The two organizations have launched 20 public-private partnerships over the last five years in Latin America, Asia, Africa and the Middle East. Their joint activities included projects that trained teachers in the effective use of information and communications technologies (ICTs), provided technology support for schools, improved the quality of education, and brought PCs, connectivity and digital content to youth.

USAID and Intel are building on their past success and expanding collaborative efforts into a number of new sectors. An agreement signed today between USAID and Intel focuses joint efforts on expanding access to broadband, girl's education and women's economic empowerment, climate change, health and entrepreneurship. As a result of the successes achieved over the past five years, USAID and Intel seek to help underserved communities in emerging market economies to connect and compete in the global marketplace.

Intel has helped us design solutions that make our joint efforts go farther," stated Maura O'Neill, USAID's Chief Innovation Officer, at a ceremony held at USAID to sign a new, five-year Memorandum of Understanding.

"Given the increasing complexity of the local and global social challenges the world faces-public-private partnerships such as this one [with USAID] become essential to creating both social and business value," stated Shelly Esque, Vice President, Intel Corporate Affairs Group and President of the Intel Foundation.

This strategic partnership with Intel allowed USAID to access the technical expertise and innovative thinking of one of the world's leading technology companies. Together, they pursued projects that positively impacted many lives in the communities where they both work and furthered the goals of both their organizations.
