WASHINGTON D.C. – Dr. Rajiv Shah, Administrator of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), will be participating in numerous events throughout the 19th International AIDS Conference week. On Tuesday, July 24^th, Administrator Shah will participate in a press conference at the Walter E Washington Convention Center.

The theme of the conference is “Turning the Tide Together.” The International AIDS Conference is the biennial gathering of AIDS scientists, international policymakers, implementers and people living with AIDS from around the world. AIDS 2012 will take place July 22 - 27 in Washington, D.C.  The return of the conference to the U.S. after 22 years is the result of the U.S. government’s elimination of HIV-related entry restrictions.   Since the launch of USAID's HIV/AIDS program in 1986, the Agency has been on the forefront of the global AIDS response.

Monday, July 23^rd, 2012

RESULTS/ RESULTS Educational Fund International Conference

Time: 9:00 am – 9:45 am

Location: Crystal City Doubletree

Administrator Shah will be the keynote speaker at the RESULTS/ RESULTS Educational Fund International Conference. Administrator Shah will be addressing over 400 grassroots activists and discussing USAID’s continued role in the fight against HIV/AIDS, as well as the recent Child Survival Call to Action.

Country Ownership Panel, International AIDS Conference

Time: 4:30 pm – 5:00 pm

Location: Walter E. Washington Convention Center

Administrator Shah will give introductory remarks at the Country Ownership Panel at the International AIDS Conference.  He will be addressing in-country ownership solutions and the role of global donors.

USAID/World Bank Debate

Time: 6:30 pm

Location: Preston Auditorium, World Bank

Along with World Bank President Jim Kim, Administrator Shah will be the introductory speaker at the USAID/World Bank debate on the use of development funds for the HIV/AIDS response. Panelists will debate the statement, “Continued AIDS investments by donors and governments are a sound investment, even in a resource-constrained environment.”

Population Services International (PSI) Press Conference

Time: 2:00 – 2:30 pm

Location: Walter E. Washington Convention Center

Administrator Shah will participate in a press conference on HIV prevention organized by Population Services International. Other participants include Debra Messing, an award-winning actress and PSI Global Health Ambassador; Ron Zwanziger, CEO of Alere; Dr. Krishna Jafa, Director of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Tuberculosis at PSI; Paul DeLay, Deputy Executive Director at UNAIDS; and Chief Mumena of the Kaonde people of Solwezi, Zambia.

Summit on Role of Christian Faith Community in Global Health and HIV/AIDS

Time: 1:50 – 2:30 pm

Location: O’Donovan Hall, Georgetown University

Administrator Shah will serve on a panel examining the role of the faith community in leveraging HIV work for the health of the whole person. Other panelists include moderator Michael Gerson, Dr. Rick Warren of Saddleback Church, Dave Evans of Food for the Hungry, Lois Quam of the U.S. Global Health Initiative, and Bishop Joshua Banda of Zambia.

Office of the U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator Women & Girls Event

Time: 7:00 – 7:45 pm

Location: National Museum of Women in the Arts

Administrator Shah will serve on a panel hosted by the Office of the U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator discussing how AIDS affects women and girls worldwide. Other panelists include Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women’s Issues Melanne Verveer, U.S. Global Health Initiative Executive Director Lois Quam, and U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Dr. Thomas Frieden.
