This project was designed to replace the Kosovo Food and Veterinary Agency’s (KFVA) multiple redundant and inefficient veterinary and phytosanitary systems with a new, unified system that will ensure better information exchange and interception of animal and plant products.
The outcome of the activity will have a positive impact on international trade, specifically regarding easier and safer movement of goods with animal and plant origin.
Unification of the veterinary and phytosanitary systems is necessary to streamline the current border operations and ensure the rule of law. Although the direct beneficiary of this new system will be the Kosovo Food and Veterinary Agency (KFVA), other Government of Kosovo institutions operating in border points and involved in border management may, if deemed appropriate and in the interest of public safety and security, access and use the common database.
USAID in Kosovo assists the agriculture sector through a wide variety of activities, including collaboration with KFVA, which is one of the key oversight agencies. This activity will further enhance and increase the capacity of this crucial Government of Kosovo institution as one of several activities under USAID Forward, a mechanism that aims to strengthen the Agency by embracing new partnerships, investing in the catalytic role of innovation, and demanding a relentless focus on results.
This activity will also further the objectives of the Mission’s Economic Growth Strategy, which includes promoting growth not only through job creation and increased access to finance, but, in doing so, also ensures that agricultural development includes a strong focus on improving food quality and safety.
