On May 2, 2013, Deputy Mission Director Polly Dunford represented USAID/Mozambique at the national dissemination of the final results from the 2011 Demographic and Health Survey (DHS), delivered by the National Institute of Statistics. Dr. João Dias Loureiro, President of the National Institute of Statistics and Mr. Marcelino Lucas, Permanent Secretary of the Mozambique’s Ministry of Health chaired the meeting. A significant number of international key donor agencies and members of interested Mozambican institutions were also in attendance.

DHS surveys have been implemented in over 90 countries worldwide and are internationally considered the gold standard for national and provincial demographic and health data. The 2011 DHS results presented to the public today, will be used to conduct startegic planning for almost all health related activities in Mozambique.

As the largest donor to the Mozambique’s health sector, the U.S. Government, through USAID, played the lead role in funding the 2011 DHS. The National Institute of StatisticS conducted the DHS survey with support from the MEASURE DHS project. USAID will also support the dissemination of the 2011 DHS results through a series of workshops, at provincial level, which will be implemented by the Population Reference Bureau.
