Differences matter in Kosovo. USAID, through its activities with Kosovo’s civil society, is working to build an inclusive society where the human rights of all groups are respected.  The importance of social inclusion was highlighted at a December 8 conference in Pristina that brought together key stakeholders dealing with vulnerable and marginalized groups.  “Inclusivity is more than just a societal good, it is about fairness and equality; for women, for minorities, for persons with disabilities, and for members of the LGBTI community, all of whom face societal and official barriers and prejudice, including in housing, education, employment, and medical care,” said Chargé d’affaires Colleen Hyland at the opening of the conference.  She was joined by the President of Kosovo, Hashim Thaqi.

The goal of the conference was to increase coordination between civil society organizations (CSOs) and Kosovo institutions dealing with the human rights of marginalized groups. USAID, through its Engagement for Equity activity, supports vulnerable and marginalized groups and strengthens civil society’s role in influencing the development and implementation of policies affecting these communities.
