Pristina, December 10 -  Today, on International Human Rights Day, the U.S. Ambassador to Kosovo  Greg Delawie, joined by H.E. President Atifete Jahjaga, USAID/Kosovo Mission Director James Hope  and Minister of Justice Hajredin Kuçi, participated in the launch of a national campaign to support women’s rights to property.

“I’m pleased that we are marking International Human Rights Day with the launch of a campaign of special importance dedicated to one of the basic human principles, that of the right of ownership,” said President of the Republic of Kosovo Jahjaga in her opening remarks.

The campaign aims to increase public understanding of property rights in general and women’s right to inherit property in particular. The campaign is based on the findings of a survey conducted in April 2015, which found that 73 percent of Kosovars do not have basic knowledge of their property rights. 

The campaign is part of USAID’s Property Rights Program is a four year activity that aims to address challenges to exercising property rights in Kosovo. The program works in partnership with the Government of Kosovo, selected municipalities, and other relevant local and international stakeholders to promote better coordination and setting of policy priorities in the area of property rights, improved court processes related to property claims, enhanced ability for women to exercise their property rights in practice, and greater access to information and understanding of property rights.
