The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), Cisco and World Learning today announced a new collaboration to promote local entrepreneurs, workforce development and economic growth in developing countries. The collaboration will work through the Cisco Entrepreneur Institute and Cisco Networking Academy-programs that provide entrepreneurship and information and communications technology (ICT) education, mentoring networks, and technology resources-to help individuals develop and manage successful businesses.

On October 26th, the Republic of Georgia passed legislation to mandate and enforce seatbelt use on city roads and highways. The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has announced the honorees of the 2010 George Washington Carver Agricultural Excellence Award. This marked the first year the award was bestowed to the leader of an American Indian Tribal College when Dr. S. Verna Fowler, President of the College of Menominee Nation was named. The award was established in 2002 to honor international contributions from Minority Serving Institutions. Dr. Freddie L. Richards, Dean of Agriculture and Human Sciences at Prairie View A&M University, a historically black university, was also selected to receive the prestigious award.

The U.S. Government, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), opened two post-harvest mango centers today to increase production and incomes for thousands of Haitian farmers. The centers will prepare produce, particularly mangos, for export by improving packaging methods and meeting standards of foreign importers who lack significant mango production domestically.

A solar-powered autoclave for sterilizing surgical instruments in the field, a portable irrigation system that instantly converts saltwater to fresh water, and a bicycle converted to a corn sheller or cell-phone charger were among the innovative and inexpensive technologies introduced by 18 teams of inventors at a science fair and development forum yesterday.

USAID, Babson College, and the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) are embarking on a partnership to strengthen entrepreneurship in different countries around the world. This innovative new project will measure entrepreneurship rates and characteristics, as well as other factors influencing small and medium business growth in Egypt, Turkey, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. Using this data, policymakers in these nations will be able to better recognize the type of environment necessary to promote the creation and growth of small businesses.

Ten years ago, the global community came together in an unprecedented display of unity to adopt the Millennium Development Goals – a set of eight goals to guide global efforts to alleviate extreme poverty by 2015 and meet the needs of the world’s most vulnerable populations. The 8th Goal – Develop a Global Partnership for Development – challenged donor countries to partner and provide more sustainable assistance to the developing world.

As members of the international bilateral donor community, we recognize the tremendous impact that private sector actors can have on development and we commit to working together to meet the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). These objectives have been previously outlined in the Millennium Development Goal– Develop a Global Partnership for Development. In the ten years since the MDGs were established, the international community has made great progress in developing partnerships with business and we come together today to renew and give greater meaning to our commitment.
