Thank you for inviting me to join you in celebrating the leadership, talent, potential and promise of Kenyan women.
For decades, USAID has been leading global efforts to achieve gender equality – believing that long-term, sustainable development will only be possible when women and men enjoy equal opportunity to rise to their potential.
U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Kenya Mission Director Karen Freeman joined development partners, the Ford Foundation, Independent Television Service, and CARE International to launch Women in the Red, a media campaign designed to raise the profile of Kenyan women as leaders. In collaboration with , the Women in the Red campaign will engage audiences and promote activities that encourage leadership development, violence prevention, and economic empowerment.
The United States has partnered with the Government of Kenya for 50 years to improve the lives of Kenya’s children. Today, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) continued that support by launching the Inuka Community-Based Orphans and Vulnerable Children Project. The Inuka Project is a USAID and Ananda Marga Universal Relief Team partnership to provide for the care and support of 11,000 orphans and vulnerable children in Siaya County.
It is a pleasure to be with you today to celebrate the launch of Wezesha Project. Wezesha Project is a USAID partnership with Lifeskills Promoters, and its partners, St Johns’ Community Center and Christian Partnership on AIDS in Kenya, to coordinate the sustainable care of 20,000 orphans and vulnerable children in Homa Bay, Kisii, and Migori Counties.
