Caribbean island nations are heavily dependent on imported oil to meet their energy needs. Even after recent oil price declined, regional electricity prices remain among the highest in the Western Hemisphere, restricting economic development and energy access levels, especially among marginal groups and female-headed households. This lack of energy security also inhibits progress towards the region’s environmental and climate change goals — issues exacerbated by outdated power grid infrastructure, under-utilized renewable energy resources, small populations, service-oriented economies, and unmet potential for energy efficiency technologies.

With abundant natural resources and expensive fossil fuels, Caribbean countries have a strong incentive to be at the forefront of renewable energy development.

WHAT WE DO:

USAID Caribbean Clean Energy Program (USAID CARCEP) is a five-year development activity aimed at helping the region to create an enabling environment that promotes investment in renewable energy and energy efficiency for a brighter, more sustainable future. Through regional partnerships, USAID CARCEP assists beneficiary countries in establishing effective policy, legislative and regulatory environments as well as incentives for energy efficiency and low-emission growth in the energy sector. USAID CARCEP also works closely with the private sector to drive investments in clean energy development.

ACTIVITY DURATION: October 1, 2015 – March 31, 2020

PROGRAM COMPONENTS:

• Improving an enabling environment for clean energy development
• Optimizing variable renewable energy integration
• Accelerating private sector clean energy investment
• Benchmarking energy efficiency in the tourism sector
• Coordinating and promoting USAID and USG Inter-Agency activities in the energy sector and sharing lessons learned with other island nations

CARCEP is working in Jamaica, St. Kitts & Nevis, Barbuda, Antigua, Dominica, St. Lucia, Barbardos, Grenada., St. Vincent and the Grenadines
