USAID Launches Impact Blog to Inform Public on Global Initiatives and Activities

WASHINGTON, DC - United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Administrator Dr. Rajiv Shah will make his first trip to Africa as Administrator today, visiting both Kenya and Sudan. During his six-day visit he will focus on the development and progress of President Obama's Global Health Initiative and Food Security Initiative, while gaining a deeper understanding of U.S. bilateral and regional investments in agriculture, health, and democracy and governance. The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) hosted a diverse group of private sector representatives in San Salvador today, encouraging them to join the sea turtle conservation effort. Sea turtles, which are an endangered species, nest along the Salvadoran coastline.

U.S. Embassy Charge d'Affaires Robert Blau and representatives from USAID participated in a breakfast with business leaders and members of environmental conservation groups, along with two special guests: Biologist Wallace J. Nichols and Oceanographer and Environmental Economist Fabien Cousteau (grandson of Jacques Cousteau, the celebrated French sailor and researcher).

WASHINGTON, DC - The Inspectors General for the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the Department of State, and the Department of Defense have issued their first Quarterly Progress and Oversight Report on the Civilian Assistance Program in Pakistan. The report covers the period from October 15, 2009, when the Enhanced Partnership with Pakistan Act of 2009 became law, through March 31, 2010.

Joins Assistant Secretary of State Eric Schwartz as USAID Operations Transition from Emergency Response to Long-Term Reconstruction

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Susan Reichle, USAID's Senior Deputy Assistant Administrator for Democracy, Conflict, and Humanitarian Assistance, visited Haiti Wednesday through Friday this week to meet with key stakeholders to discuss the U.S. Government's ongoing transition from emergency response to reconstruction, continued deployment of mitigation efforts in advance of the rainy season, and plans for transitional shelter construction in the next few months.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and IBM signed a Memorandum of Understanding this week on a new Alliance for International Corporate Volunteerism (ICV). The Alliance establishes a self-sustaining ICV facility that will help private sector firms interested in international corporate volunteerism to organize and direct their efforts in ways that will best contribute to sound development outcomes.

Gambatesa, Inspector General for the United States Agency for International Development, announced today that Ali Mohamed Bagegni, 56, formerly of Columbia, Mo., pleaded guilty in Federal court on April 6, 2010, for his role in a conspiracy to illegally transfer funds to Iraq in violation of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA).

BISHKEK, Kyrgyz Republic - The U.S. Agency for International Development is donating $100,000 worth of medical supplies to help hospitals that are treating victims of the April 7-8 civil unrest in the Kyrgyz Republic.

The medical supplies will be presented in an April 16 ceremony to the Bishkek City Trauma and Orthopedics Scientific and Research Center. The donation was procured by USAID's grantee CitiHope International.

BAGHDAD, Iraq - A new private sector initiative designed by the U.S. Agency for International Development to create employment opportunities for young Iraqis was initiated March 25 by the USAID-Tijara Provincial Economic Growth Program. The project hopes to expose young Iraqis living in underserved or impoverished areas to essential business skills and entrepreneurial opportunities.

This year the focus of World Health Day is on the world's growing urban population. The theme, "1000 cities, 1000 lives" provides an opportunity to highlight the work that is being done to improve health in urban settings. The unprecedented rate of urban growth has far outstripped the ability of these cities to provide infrastructure for new residents. This lack of infrastructure will lead to an estimated 2 billion people living in slums over the next 20 years.

WASHINGTON D.C. - Global Pulse 2010, the three-day online collaboration session focused on creating solutions to critical global challenges, is gaining momentum as thousands of participants sign on to share ideas that will build a stronger global community.

During the first 63 hours of Global Pulse 2010 there were 14,000 total logins and 9,000 posts from participants in over 150 countries. Robust discussions are forming around a wide variety of topics from democratizing democracy, to human trafficking, to renewable energy development.
