Recurrent clashes in Guinea’s forests have become a deep source of concern. Home to 25 percent of the country’s population and the majority of its extractive wealth, the region is marked by high levels of unemployment and poverty, ethnic division and a history of conflict imported from neighboring countries. Hundreds have been killed and thousands displaced in recent violence.
In southern Guinea, many poor families have a small amount of land to grow food and constantly struggle to feed themselves. Telimélé's climate is tropical and humid, with regular rainfall during the growing season. The main economic agricultural activity is pepper farming. However, the environment is perfect for another crop with export potential—ginger.
In Guinea, malaria is the leading cause of health consultations, and is responsible for 31 percent of hospitalizations and 14.2 percent of deaths. All people, particularly children under 5 and pregnant women, are at risk.
