Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – The U.S. Government, through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands signed an agreement today to work together on the development of Ethiopia’s dairy sector. The collaboration will provide significant expertise from both sides to benefit suppliers, farmers, processors, consumers and exporters engaged in the dairy sector.
Earlier this week, an eight member congressional delegation visited Ethiopia. The delegation consisted of senators Chris Coons, Jeff Merkley and Al Franken and representatives David Cicilline, Joseph P. Kennedy, Betty McCollum, Terri A. Sewell and Kay Granger. While in Ethiopia the members visited U.S. development assistance project sites, held a roundtable discussion with Ethiopian civil society members, and met with Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, the African Union chairperson.
The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and Agro Prom International today officially inaugurated a new industrial chickpea processing and cleaning facility in the Oromia Region. Due to gaps in quality, Ethiopia chickpea exports usually end up in lesser value markets. Because the machinery in the new facility cleans chickpeas to above 99 percent purity and has the capacity to clean five metric tons per hour, Agro Prom is poised to sell to the more demanding and higher value American, European and Middle Eastern markets.
Arba Minch, Ethiopia – U.S. Ambassador to Ethiopia Patricia M. Haslach travelled to the Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples Region (SNNPR) on August 13 and 14 to observe U.S.-funded humanitarian assistance activities. During her trip, the Ambassador witnessed the distribution of emergency food commodities to food insecure beneficiaries in Humbo woreda (district). As part of a U.S. food assistance program that has helped approximately two million Ethiopians meet urgent food needs this year, 450 beneficiaries in Abela Faricho kebele (community) received monthly food rations from the United States including wheat grain, yellow split peas, and fortified vegetable oil.
During President Barack Obama's visit to Ethiopia this week, Ethiopian Electric Power and Corbetti Geothermal Plc signed Ethiopia’s first independent power purchase agreement for up to 500 megawatts (MW) of clean geothermal power from the Corbetti geothermal source. Investors in the Corbetti geothermal project include Power Africa partner Reykjavik Geothermal, Power Africa partner Berkeley Energy, and Iceland Drilling.
