For Immediate Release
CAIRO – The U.S. Embassy is pleased to announce that U.S.-based Democracy International (DI) will observe the upcoming presidential election. The Egyptian Presidential Election Commission recently accredited DI, as well as five other international organizations and 79 Egyptian organizations, to observe the presidential election process in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and international commitments.
“Democracy International is an internationally respected leader in the field of election observation. We look forward to their independent and professional analysis of this vitally important election,” said Chargé d'Affaires Marc J. Sievers.
DI is a private, American non-governmental organization that promotes free and legitimate elections through election observation and related programs that support democratic principles. Funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), DI will observe and analyze each stage of the presidential election as a neutral entity, including the political environment in which the election will take place.
DI has broad experience leading election observation missions in over 50 countries, including the observation of Egypt’s 2014 constitutional referendum. A link to the final report of DI’s observations of the 2014 constitutional referendum is available at: http://democracyinternational.com/publications/egypt-constitutional-referendum-observation-report
As a signatory of the Declaration of Principles for International Election Observation and the Code of Conduct for International Election Observers, DI will conduct its observation mission in Egypt in strict accordance with these international principles.
