USAID is on the cutting edge of new and innovative approaches to development so that all children can learn to read, youth can find education and employment opportunities, and those living in areas affected by crisis and conflict have access to an education.

Over the last several decades, enormous progress has been made toward ensuring all children have access to a quality education. Despite this progress, monumental challenges remain. The number of children and youth out of school is at 124 million worldwide and on the rise. In addition, many children who are in school are not learning, with some 250 million children of primary school age unable to read, write or do basic math.

Positioned on the heels of the UN Special Summit for the Sustainable Development Goals where education is a prominent theme, the USAID 2015 Global Education Summit came at a key point in time for the global education community; when themes including girls' education and empowerment are gaining huge political traction under the U.S. Government’s Let Girls Learn initiative, and when the U.S. State Department’s 2015 Quadrennial Diplomacy and Development Review underscores education as one of the ways to prevent and mitigate conflict and violent extremism, promote economic growth, and end extreme poverty.

The summit brought together a broad array of stakeholders in the field of global education, including USAID education staff from missions around the world, representatives from the U.S. Government, partner countries’ Ministries of Education, NGOs, think tanks, as well as thought leaders to review current best practices and demonstrate new and innovative approaches to global education.

With the previous USAID Education Strategy approaching the end of its 2011-2015 timeframe, the USAID celebrated the momentum built under the that Education Strategy, and worked with our global partners to set a strong course for continued strategic investment in education. Together, we will continue to help increase access to a quality education for children and youth.
